Stormy Weather. November. Short stories.

Devastation

  Sturdy greenhouse

Stormy weather. No decent shut eye over the weekend! The wind howled and the chimney's growled all over town. Significant collateral damage. Crushed vegetable patches in the garden, upturned furniture and general disarray. A landfill site!  Did the forecast not suggest we bolt everything down? Surprisingly the glasshouse is intact its green and red tomatoes hanging, unfazed, like Chinese lanterns. An overflowing black butt with not a dead bird in sight. Great! Both butts and feeders can be treacherous places for the smaller birds. The house itself, sturdy but old and with ill-fitting windows, frayed pulleys and tassels, has shed a few slates. A slice of window frame has also come undone. Creaking with age! Will set to a clear up once the wind has calmed.

November brings other chills. All Souls month. A time to pause and remember our dead. I think on my extended family .... so many and varied once upon a time .... now shrunk to a few kindly souls.  I remember with fondness my parents and my younger brother who passed away not so long ago. Graveside memories linger still. The biting wind and rain. Did a bell ringer ring? Thought I heard a forlorn ding-dong as we snailed from the gate along a ribbon pathway to the grave site, upturned.

Dublin whispers. Grave space at a premium in the capital. Cemeteries full to capacity and overflowing. Cremation the talk of the town.

Opened Clare Morgan's new book of short stories pm. 'An Affair of the Heart.'  Ms Morgan delivers the goods as outlined on the back cover of the book. She is ace at setting and the inner workings of her well crafted characters. I am terribly excited by her voice which is new to me. Ms Morgan can certainly draw a reader to her fictional world and transport him/her to another time and place altogether. What more could a reader ask?
